The stroll across the bridge away from the main tourist area is pleasant. Very friendly and helpful owners. Food excellant, home cooked and good value for money. We enjoyed our lunch sitting outside.

In St Esprit, a Bohemian part of Bayonne, not many visitors will perhaps bother to cross the river for this place. If you do - or if you're near the train station anyway - this is a great place for an excellently-priced lunch or early evening meal. They do a couple of daily meals, all fresh and at prices you won't find in the more fashionable districts of Grand or Petit Bayonne. The lady who runs it is very charming, makes you feel welcome. Vegetarians will be accommodated, too. Recommended. Note it's only open Mon-Fri and only until around early evening, but the kitchen is open from around 11.00--18.00 continuously, so you could have a meal when other places are shut. It's a far better option than the fast-food places close to the train station. As they do take-aways (with plastic cutlery provided), you can smuggle stuff into your hotel!

Our luck to be hungry not at the times restaurants are typically open for dinner. We stumbled upon Le Square Gourmand. What we wanted to order was sold out. Madame went out of her way to find us something we would like. I was impressed with her concern that we eat. The food was simple and tasty. Nice little sidewalk table. Very attentive Madame. A little place not to miss!!!

I stopped by here whilst waiting for the train to St Jean Pied de Ports and was very well looked after. My French isn't great but the owner was really helpful and we still managed a conversation. The food was great, I had a grilled sausage and cheese baguette while watching the world go by. I think the boulangerie and charcuterie are next door so the ingredients were fresh. More than anything I felt welcome and thoroughly recommend Le Square Gourmand to anyone with 45 minutes to take in Bayonne while enjoying a proper French sandwich.

This quaint little restaurant/bar is staffed with very friendly, English-speaking wait staff, who actually smile and explain things to you. Willy and Lucy were very kind to us as we spent hours in their restaurant. Overall, good food and good atmosphere.
