One of the great pleasures about visiting Brasserie and Bar St. Christophe is sitting at one of the sidewalk tables, sipping a cold white wine and watching the life of Bordeaux pass by on the Rue Saint James. It is an instant fashion show as people young and old walk swiftly by, ride their bicycles, or gun the motors of their motorcycles on this pedestrian street where it is said that St. James walked on his pilgrimage to Compostela. Moving constantly inside and out is the engine of this one man show, Naji, who is the server, the chef, the mixologist and the occasional chess player. You name it, he does it. We like to end up here in the afternoon following our daily walk by the river. The wines, always good quality, run in price from 3 euros to 3 euros 50 cents. But there are other times we go for lunch. There is no menu. Naji prepares one “plat” a day. If you like his offering, you eat there; if you don’t, you go somewhere else. The cost is 12 euros 50 cents a plate. On days we have eaten at St. Christophe the offerings included merguez sausages, stuffed eggplant and occasionally falafel. When we went recently, the star of the day’s repas was a Middle Eastern meat loaf, but I’m getting ahead of myself. As we sat down at one of the small tables inside, Naji suggested an aperitif, on this day glasses of St. Raphael, a wine based aromatic liqueur. Then came the main. The meatloaf was accompanied by an array of delights. There was hummus, cold cuts, tabouli, golden rice, roasted vegetables, olives and sour cream. With our meal we drank a dry, crisp rose from Aix en Provence, 9 euros for the bottle. Next came a plate of cheeses. There was a fresh goat cheese, a smooth Comte and morsels of a blue d'Auvergne. When the cheese was gone, Naji wanted to know if we wanted a “fraîche” digestif, a cool drink to aid the digestion. When we said yes, ice and so many liqueurs went into a cocktail shaker that I can’t tell you exactly what was in it -- other than to say it was smooth and delicious.

Un excellent refuge pour boire un café ou picorer une assiette! Le barman/cuisto est très arrangeant et disponible... ce qui n'est pas sans contraster parfois avec les adresses environnantes!

Almost fell upon this place on the way to check out another restaurant. We were trying to see what others sitting at the small tables outside the little café/restaurant were eating when a couple of friendly Australians told us that the food was Mediterranean and was a mixture of whatever the owner put on the plate! It looked good and we had struggled to find somewhere to have a lightish lunch - most places seem to do the meal of the day and we like to eat properly in the evening. So we sat down and ordered a couple of beers and asked the waitress if we could share a plate of food - I told her that I didn't want any meat - just vegetables/salad. She was fine about the sharing and went off to get the beers. When the food came it was mostly veggie but a couple of meat dishes seemed to have crept onto the plate :-) It didn't matter as my husband hovered that up. We had hummus, shredded salad, lettuce, tomato, warm moussaka-type food, salami or sliced chorizo, radish, chickpeas and feta cheese. Or something to that effect. It was delicious and a very good price. We had bread and water with that. We went back in the evening for a wine and a beer and to watch the world go by - seems to be somewhere that really interesting people walk past. Would recommend a visit or two.

Last year, we discovered St. Christophe by accident one afternoon as we searched for a glass of wine after a long walk. This year, we went straight there for lunch. The patron/chef, Naji, prepares one Mediterranean inspired meal a day. If you want it, you eat with him, if you don’t, you don’t.We began with an aperitif, a kir for me and a glass of Bordeaux Claret for Kathy. Then came the main event. The “repas” is a plate loaded with food. There were slices of fresh ham, green beans slow simmered that absolutely melted on your tongue, courgettes (zucchini) that had real flavor served of a bed of basmati rice. Then, working around the plate, was a salad with absolutely fresh tomatoes and crisp, flavorful lettuce in a dressing that was flecked with feta cheese. There were also crunchy slices of radish, and finally, a dollop of hummus garnished with olive oil and chickpeas. With our meal we drank the house white of the day, a dry white wine from Graves. Dessert consisted of wedges of flourless chocolate cake garnished with fresh, juicy seeds of pomegranate. Then it was time for a digestif. My wife chose a glass of rosé. But for me, Naji chose a marc, a clear prune eau de vie, house made by a little restaurant in Bucharest, Romania. Its flavor was deep, smooth and plus forte (very strong). It was served with a cluster of ripe grapes that somehow made the marc seem even more flavorful. The tab for all that, including taxes and tip, was 47 euros 60 cents. An amazing bargain.
