Merci Madame.
We had the opportunity to eat here on the second day of our hike from Oloron Saint Marie to St. Jean Pied-de-Port. The setting is ideal...small town, views of the old church, shady terrace. But the food was probably the best meal we had on our entire trip. The service was outstanding and we felt like they were there just for us. You simply should not miss this restaurant.
Summer time this restaurant has the very best shady terrace. Winter time the inside is comfortable. Service is very friendly and good which is a big bonus in France. The foos was hearty traditional meals and good sized portions. There is a free Carbure Starter which is an old fashioned farm house soup.
In a terrace under two large plane trees with the Romanesque church in vew there is this good road stop. No parking problem and sedate grounds to enjoy one of their menus at reasonable prices. We chose one with the goat cheese salad and the fresh pan seared trout that was quite satifying, particularly since the trout was very fressh. The outside terrace is great but inside is rather gloomy and as usual in small towns paying with a credit card is a challenge due to poor computer connections. Ohterwise, the peacefull setting and the visit to the XII century church, a site of stoppage for those in the Way of Santiago is a must. indeed this jewell can be accessed at will and the interior boast a rarity in this side of the Pyrenees a cupula of moorish design. A stroll through the small village is a good after lunch experience of truly rural south France
We were seated at a private spot by a window in a lovely room with a piano, stone walls and a wooden barrel ceiling. A charming girl waited on us and was a delight. She wrote down the names of all 6 wines we tasted. They were unusual picks and all perfectly matched with our dinners. The chef served up little surprises... the warm grissini wrapped with Iberian prosciutto came with mascerated popcorn & tapenade. The velouté of asparagus was set off by crumbled almond bits. Great scallops. Great langoustines & white asparagus.
I wrote a review of this restaurant two years ago and it was dreadful. Poor food and confrontational staff. However it has greatly improved, I do not know if it is under new management but much much better.I wouldn't have returned but it was recommended by our B&B landlord and we put the address into the satnav and off we went not knowing it was taking us to the same place. We nearly didn't stop when re realised but it looked different inside and there were a lot of people eating. Also it was late so we were not sure where else would be open, we gave it a go.Both had the special which was a very good steak with vegetables and potato's and was really well cooked. The staff did all appear to be different and we found them helpful and efficient. In all a good eating experience and I am glad we took the plunge and gave it a go.
