Fantastic food, friendly owner, reasonably priced. I was not expecting Cuban Island to be as good as it is. It is not much to look at, with very basic decor and bright fluorescent lighting (a pet peeve of mine). I sat down and perused the small but interesting menu. Several dishes sounded good, so I asked the wait person (who I quickly learned was the owner) to make a recommendation. She told me the chicken and shrimp plate was her favorite, so this is what I chose. I also ordered two Cuban tacos as an appetizer. The tacos came out quickly, and were wrapped in foil and steaming hot. They were served with a small cup of hot sauce and a small cup of cilantro sauce. Now, I LOVE my hot sauce...r...
Hidden gem. I am surprised this place isn't packed at lunch. had a very good lunch here this week. Had the chicken and rice. Comes with Yucca (potatoe) or fried bananas. The chicken kinda reminded me of Fajitas when I first saw it but the flavor was not liked that at all The rice and beans are very good and try mixing in some of the hot sauce or the cilantro sauce. Both were very good Cuban soda kinda like Pineapple was good as well. Going to try the Cuban sandwich next time as she told me she makes the bread herself You need to try this place!
Great experience all around... I went to this place on a whim because so many people on here recommended it and I was NOT disappointed. I ordered the Vacation Grits with Yucca and Rice with Black beans, mango juice, and a piece of the pineapple coconut tres leches cake. Everything was delicious and given in generous portions. Definitely worth the money spent (which was not overpriced). The owner was the one who helped me and she is a very pleasant woman. I will certainly be back to try more items on the menu!
Absolutely the best food I've had in Roanoke, hands-down. The best Cuban food ever and everything is made fresh by the owner. Definitely take advantage of the fresh juices that she has each day that she makes in the store. They're cheap and they're fantastic. Beans and rice are seasoned to perfection, the quantity is great for the price you pay, and the plantains are to die for. I got the tilapia and it was fantastic, my husband got the pork and he loved it. Réservez une table maintenant

Fresh, home-style Cuban cuisine. A must visit!. Talk about a hidden gem. This Cuban restaurant run by it's wonderfully kind restaurateur is a must visit in Roanoke. Definitely out of the way, unless you travel Williamson Rd much, but well worth the detour. Our family eats there now at least or times a month. The Vaca Frita is amazing and she cooks her food fresh every day. No leftovers from the day before mouth-watering awesomeness.
Authentic Wonderfulness.. Best, freshest, and most delicious Cuban food you'll find! Estela is such a gracious hostess and is very willing to take time to describe the menu to newcomers. The place is so clean you could safely eat from the floor. Home made desserts! Home made everything, really. I have had almost everything on the menu at some point or another, and have yet to find anything I dislike. Eat here! You won't be sorry!
