We stopped on the way thru to El Campo for a softball tournament. They were just closing up when Mrs.Evelyn asked if I was hungry. As soon as I said yes ma’am, she went to the kitchen! I told her we would come back another time but she insisted on making us a plate for the road. The Oxtail was DELICIOUS! (Which I’d never had) the beef tips w gravy taters were awesome as well! She gave us sides of cabbage, blackeyed peas, greens beans, okra, yams cornbread! The food is better than ANYTHING around THE BEST soul food I’ve ever had! (From a country girl)
this place has great eating? they gave us some rehearsals to try first what made it even harder to meet a choice! I've never eaten ochs or dizzyed, so I was understandable first....but everything we tried was excellent?! the portions were so big that I now have my dinner! I'll go back to the next time I go to wharton! I am now a soul food more believing! super nice people and very clean I almost forget. the pecan pie is to die for?
Drove down from Tomball just to try Evelyn's Soulfood. What a treat this cute little place was...The Oxtails were fall off the bone tasty.. Ms. Evelyn suggested the tea mixed with the pink lemonade and lord have mercy, she was spot on!The other patrons were so nice and very welcoming as well as the owner and her family..definitely worth the trip!
Pricy but amazing. And most portions were plenty for two to overeat. Everything spiced perfectly except the cornbread dressing that needs sage. But that is a personal preference. So friendly and made sure we did not need anything throughout the meal. Will be back.

This is the best seafood I have had in a long time. We are from Richmond and I would not hesitate to drive 40 minutes again just to eat here. It is a must-visit for anyone with an appetite, and the portion sizes are great! I highly recommend trying this place.
Good and proper soul food. Even my south Louisiana wife was impressed.Case in point. The oxtails were cooked so good, you could easily slurp all the meat off the bone. Most places get the meat too stringy for that, but Evelyn’s cooked them just right.
The food is delicious and cooked to perfection. Evelyn, the woman serving us, has a contagious smile that lifts our moods.
Definitely worth it! One plate could easily feed two people, the staff is friendly, and the food is delicious!
