"On a quiet fall sunny day we discovered this little cute restaurant in the middle of Kandersteg. Super old weathered Swiss house on the outside and a touch of modern world inside done with elegance. We ordered typical Swiss dishes: roestis and kaseschnitte, no disappointment at all, excellent presentation and food! Highly recommend this restaurant. Will definitely go back!"

We came for lunch here on a gloomy day, after a morning's skiing and walking. A party of six, with two children, very hungry after the morning's activities. We arrived at about 1pm. We were acknowledged on entry and found a table at the back, near the kitchen. An opened ironing board was moved out of the way for us, and perhaps we should have read the warning signs. After about ten minutes, the waitress (who may also be the proprietor, it wasn't clear) brought us our menus and we ordered lunch. After about half an hour there was a tremendous burning smell from the kitchen, and the restaurant was filled with a smoky haze which only disappeared when we opened the windows (in February, remember). About half an hour later, an hour after we'd ordered, the food arrived.Anyway, the food was fairly good, which is the only reason this place is getting a second star.In case you're wondering, we did accost the waitress a few times to ask about our order, and we do speak German. Every time the answer was "yes, it's just coming", although her answer got more and more tetchy each time. It was as if we were actually inconveniencing her by daring to come into the restaurant and ordering food! We'd have got up and gone somewhere else if we hadn't already ordered, but we didn't want to be charged for our empty plates. The place isn't cheap, although it's average by Swiss standards. There was hardly anyone else in there, and without the Winter Olympics on the TV the restaurant would have felt like a funeral parlour.Avoid. Seriously, avoid. Unless you have a lot of time on your hands, obviously.
