This place looks like your typical strip mall restaurant. Open the door and differences begin. Exceptionally clean and sharp decor. The lady that greets you is very friendly and really tries her best to get to know each customer despite English not being her first language. I am a veteran of many Chinese restaurants and buffets but this place is a cut above. I ordered the General Tao chicken. Clearly just made, sizzling hot. No steam trays keeping things warm here. Often this dish is one note but this is not the case here Fresh hot, sweet and fresh ginger notes abound. Best Ever. Sesame noodle,s spring rolls and broccoli beef all winners. The service at this restaurant was quick. Our order included egg rolls, shrimp rolls, crab rangoon, and shrimp lo mein. Unfortunately, the crab rangoon was disappointing as it was chewy and lacking crispiness, with no real crab flavor - just cream cheese. The shrimp lo mein was satisfying and there was plenty of it. The shrimp rolls were underwhelming and the egg rolls were just okay. Overall, the meal was average.
I have eaten here 3 times in the last month and had to leave a quick note. Sandy is so nice and accommodating. Everybody who I dined with agreed the food was fresh and not of the "mall food" Chinese style. I love the chicken wings so crispy & light. Ask for her recommendations and she will detail each dish. Nice out of the way spot with plenty of parking. Truly one of Waterloo's hidden gems.
The service was fast and efficient, and the food was excellent! I was amazed at how quickly the food arrived, possibly due to living just a few kilometers away. Even for a Friday night, the service was great. We often visit this restaurant because my wife requires gluten-free options, and the food is consistently excellent. University Garden has really upped their game in significant ways. If you tried it before and we're impressed, try it again. Food. More flavorful recipes. More meat in dishes. Ordering for takeout or delivery. Easy, accurate and on time. Really good experience ordering from here every time.
