We arrived early after a long day of walking, and this place really hit the spot. There aren’t many izakayas in my area, so I wanted to give it a try. The service was attentive and quick, likely because we were one of the few customers dining around 5 PM. I ordered the agedashi tofu, chicken yakitori, horseradish, salmon with rice, and grilled mackerel. The mackerel had too many bones, so next time I’ll try a different grilled fish, perhaps the hamachi kama as recommended. I also had the mini crème broth with chocolate turf and a blueberry cup, but I think I’ll skip those next time since I was already so full from everything else. The menu is extensive, and the ambiance is great!
Our group was starving and looking for a place in Banff that wasn't as close to the large crowds. We stumbled upon this place and it was empty so we decided to give it a go. That should have been our warning. The inside is aesthetically pleasing and well decorated. They have a bar area and plenty of room inside as well as outdoor seating. I ordered the salmon however was later told they were out of it so they offered me the tuna instead. The fish was good but that's all you get, no real sides with entries. The rest of my group also felt the portions were small. Overall the consensus was that it was not a good meal and would not recommend.
The chicken karaage definitely needs some improvement. It was poorly seasoned and not very flavorful at all. The batter seemed to have too much baking soda or flour, resulting in an odd texture and a strange aftertaste. We couldn't finish it, as you can see. On a positive note, the ramen kimchi was fantastic, but it could have used egg, corn, bamboo, and seaweed to enhance it further. Overall, the meal was quite good. The sushi was just okay—nothing really stood out. Unfortunately, the ebi mayo was also a disappointment; it had an overly tangy and sour taste that felt almost like drinking vinegar.
This genuine Japanese Izakaya has become one of my all-time favorite restaurants in Banff! The food is simply outstanding! Whatever I choose from the menu, I am consistently amazed by the flavors and the exquisite presentation. The staff is attentive, cheerful, and courteous. The atmosphere and decor contribute to an authentic vibe; it’s all in the details! Their selection of sake is impressive, along with their signature cocktails, and they also have draft beer available. This place is a must-visit when in Banff. Treat yourself and enjoy this incredible restaurant—you won’t regret it!
very enjoyed this place! we ate in their other restaurant, block kitchen before a few nights and that was so good that we had to try this place. everything we had was so good. excellent service also! the oysters were fresh, lively sauce. we had the grilled skalopp I could eat. the same with the rib-eye. Sushi rolls were also delicious. many options for vegetarian and vegan also.
quite good food! expected to be disappointed, but was really delicious. I have the Sashimi combo and the bark tataki. both had a great presentation and tasted on par or better than similar expensive food in sf. the service was also good. In portions were as expected, not too small.
