I came across a recommendation for this venue from an online vegan group. To my surprise, Bad Shepherd have a great selection of vegan meals AND American BBQ. We’re a lover of BBQ, need easy dairy free options and my husband loves craft beer, so it was a perfect fit for us. The booking:<br/ You can book through open table but be quick on a Saturday. It gets booked out. We called as there were no spots. The lady on the phone was wonderful and polite and managed to find us a high table and bar stools. She called back (as promised) later to let us know we could come at an earlier time. <br/ <br/ Upon entry:<br/ We were seen to and seated immediately and were instructed to order and pay at the bar when ready (table service when served the food).<br/ The person taking my order was polite and relatable. Went here on a Saturday for lunch and definitely wasn't disappointed! The mulled cider was served piping hot and was amazing on a cold windy day .. warmed me up from the inside out and the taste was superb .. the perfect amount of spice. We ordered the brisket, burnt ends, bratwurst and lamb ribs. It all came out very quickly and hot. 100% recommend the beef brisket and lamb ribs. Both melted in the mouth. The lamb ribs were my favourite. The Alabama sauce was so good too .. the perfect amount of vinegar .. amazing on all the meat and the chips too! Stopped by for a drink, a friend recommended this place which was nice as this is hidden away in a quite industrial area.<br/ <br/ The pub is nice in decor and atmosphere, the bar is great with a huge selection of beers! Service was good although I was asking about some of the beers and the bar girl didn't offer for me to try the ones I was asking about. Beer. American Food. Dedicated vegan menu. Can it get any better?! My Partner and I sought out Bad Shephard Brewing Co after we saw that it had a dedicated vegan menu with everything from cajun chicken to 'pulled pork '. I could finally live out my dreams of greasy american style food...vegan style!<br/ <br/ Unfortunately on the day we visited they had run out of the mock Chicken (initially ordered the Cajun Chicken sandwich), but resorted to the pulled pork sandwich. Shredded jackfruit soaked in cola and BBQ sauce was an interesting combination and paired with some curly fries was the ideal combo! <br/ <br/ Would definitely recommend and visit once more.
I am truly benefiting from boutique brewing being a thing now in Melbourne. I first discovered Bad Shepherd at the East Malvern Food and Wine Festival, loved their Hazelnut Brown, later tried their Pale Ale and loved that even more. This little brewery is run by husband and wife team, Dereck and Diti Hales. It is located in Cheltenham with a busy eatery to help you enjoy the craft brews. Even better, there is a full section of the menu devoted to flavoursome, diner style, vegan fare.
My friends and i visit regularly (they have pretty great trivia on Thursdays) and we're never disappointed with the food! A decent sized menu that isn't too overwhelming but you still have trouble deciding what you want. The burgers, pork and brisket are our usual picks because you just can't fault them. A rare find in an area lacking night activities. Our first time at Bad Shepherd we just went for drinks enjoying the excellent range of craft brews, with a huge variety of flavors to suit all pallets. We went back a couple weeks later for the smoked meats and wow, what a meal! Highly recommend for dinner or drinks. Réservez une table maintenant
Had a birthday dinner at Bad Shepherd, good vibes at this place, it is quite nice to spend some time with friends but the smoked meats are pretty average. They need more taste. The beers on the other hand, there is such a variety to choose from and the staff is extremely friendly with helping out.
